In English, what's the difference between "magistrate" and "judge" in daily conversation?

Although the jobs of a magistrate and a judge are similar, usually a magistrate presides over smaller matters in smaller courts whereas a judge presides over larger matters in bigger courts. Also, a judges decisions are often binding and set precedents for when similar matters arise in the future, whereas a magistrate's decisions usually have less influence on precedent for future matters.
